Al Ain Zoo sets Guinness World Record with 12-metre palm leaf sentence
Record-setting artwork at Nature Conservation Festival reflects UAE’s sustainability vision
Al Ain Zoo has made a Guinness World Record for creating the largest sentence made entirely of palm leaves, measuring an impressive 12 metres in length and 1.7 metres in height.
The artwork, which spells out the zoo’s name, was unveiled during a special ceremony attended by Ahmed Eisa Al Harasi, Acting Director General of Al Ain Zoo, alongside management, staff, and community representatives.
The environmental initiative was recognised for adhering to Guinness World Records’ strict criteria, including sustainability standards that protect ecosystems and minimise environmental harm. The project underscores Al Ain Zoo’s dedication to nature conservation and its mission to highlight the UAE's cultural heritage.
Largest Palm Leaf Sentence
Crafted from natural materials sourced through sustainable methods, the artwork celebrates the cultural and environmental significance of the palm tree, a cherished symbol of the UAE. Palm leaves used for the piece were collected through a traditional process known locally as takreeb, involving the pruning of dry and damaged fronds from Al Ain farms.
“We are delighted to present this artwork as a testament to the palm tree’s immense environmental, cultural, and social value,” said Ahmed Eisa Al Harasi. “It stands as a symbol of Al Ain’s identity as a city of oases and palms, and aligns with our efforts to conserve nature and promote sustainability.”
The palm tree, often regarded as a symbol of abundance and prosperity, has inspired Al Ain Zoo’s conservation initiatives. The zoo expressed gratitude to its collaborators, particularly local farmers and palm owners, for their support in bringing this ambitious project to life.
Nature Conservation Festival
The achievement was part of the Nature Conservation Festival held from 9 to 18 December 2024. The festival highlighted the zoo’s sustainability initiatives and included live demonstrations of traditional Emirati crafts like palm weaving, carving, and painting. Guests were also treated to a vibrant laser and light show celebrating the record-breaking artwork.
Al Ain Zoo’s efforts aim to educate the community about the importance of environmental preservation. By involving local residents and showcasing the cultural importance of the palm tree, the zoo continues to strengthen its commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainability.
The artwork will remain on display at Al Ain Zoo, serving as a lasting reminder of the UAE’s dedication to environmental harmony and cultural pride.
